Top 10 Audio Players New Apple IPods take the top two spots on our chart of large-capacity audio players; but among midcapacity models, the Rio Carbon holds off a determined challenge from Apple's new IPod Mini. Our expanded chart of portable audio players ranks devices in two groups: large-capacity units, which have room for at least 20GB of files, and smaller, midcapacity models, which accommodate 5GB or 6GB of content. Both of the top large-capacity players are from Apple Computer. The 30GB IPod Photo??the most expensive unit in this group at $349--offers a terrific color LCD screen that enables you to look at images synced from your PC's photo library. It also delivers improved battery life over previous IPods, plus quick operations, intuitive menus, and easy-to-create playlists. (A 60GB version costs $100 more.) Closely following the IPod Photo in the rankings is its sibling, the 20GB IPod, which shares the same impressive features except that it lacks a color screen and image-playback support. The third-place IRiver H320 used to be a good deal compared with the IPod Photo; but though IRiver has cut the H320's price since the device first appeared, Apple has reduced prices on IPod Photos more substantially. Our midcapacity leaders are Rio's Carbon and a new version of Apple's IPod Mini. In a tight race, the Carbon edges the Mini, owing in part to its lighter case. The Carbon also has a built-in microphone for recording memos or your own singing; the IPods require a third-party add-on for voice recording. The 6GB Mini improves on the price-per-gigabyte ratio of the first Mini, and it claims 18 hours of battery life, more than double the former model's figure. Apple still sells its 4GB unit, which costs $199.
